• The Neuroscience Behind #recognizetorestore

Recognize to Restore is based on Dr. Bruce Perry's neurosequential model, presented in his book he co-wrote with Oprah Winfrey entitled, What Happened to You? The premise of the book is that the question, What happened to you, is foundational to engaging in healing from trauma or difficult circumstances. Another key takeaway is Dr. Perry's assertion that community and relationships are the most restorative resource we have to engage healing. Below is a synopsis of how we approach this work in Waco ISD.

    Recognize.

Recognize what has happened. Ask the question, what has happened or what is happening? Honor and acknowledge the history of experiences. Curiosity over judgment.

    Restore balance.

Restore balance and healthy rhythms. Consider each aspect of your well-being: social, emotional, mental, physical, inner life, and work life. What habits will future me thank the current me for doing?

    Restore connection.

"It is in the context of nurturing and caring relationships that a child can meet a challenge." Dr. Bruce Perry

Connection signals it is safe to engage. Connection calms our stress response (fight, flight, freeze) so that we can think clearly, engage with others, and plan and execute our goals for the day. Like children, adults are better equipped to meet the challenge in the context of caring relationships.

    Restore belonging.

Relationally rich environments promote post-traumatic wisdom.

    "We heal best in community."
